The first half of 2017 was dominated by expensive smartphones such as Samsung Galaxy S8 and Huawei P10, but to be honest, you don’t need to empty your wallet to get a top-notch phone anymore. Over the years, smartphone manufactures have been responding to an increasingly competitive market by
providing great value for money.
Samsung
The South Korean brand has managed to rope in an enormous user base by catering to a wide spectrum of consumers. Samsung Nepal launched four budget smartphones in the first half of this year — J2 Ace, J2 Pro, J5 Prime and J7 Prime, each equipped with localised features such as Turbo Speed Technology to enhance device performance, S Bike mode to help two-wheeler riders facilitate calls, an Ultra Data Saving mode and an Ultra Power Saving mode.
Samsung’s J2 Ace is a camera-centric smartphone with an 8MP rear and 5MP front-facing camera equipped with selfie-flash to improve selfies taken in low light. This affordable smartphone priced at Rs 13,990 flaunts a 5-inch QHD (Quad High Definition) display, a 1.5GB RAM and 8GB of ROM.
Samsung J5 Prime and J7 Prime are priced at Rs 23,990 and Rs 29,490 respectively. J5 Prime comes with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of ROM, a 13MP rear and 5MP front camera and a 5-inch display topped by 2.5D Gorilla Glass. J7 Prime on the other hand boasts a massive 32GB RAM and ROM and comes with Knox Security and a fingerprint sensor. It has a 13MP rear and 8MP front- facing camera and a 5.5-inch FHD display with 2.5D Gorilla Glass protection.
Samsung Nepal plans to launch another budget smartphone — the J7 Max towards the end of July which will come with a 5.7-inch FHD display, 4GB RAM, 32GB ROM
and 13MP rear and front-facing cameras.
Gionee
Tele Talk Pvt Ltd, authorised distributors of the Chinese brand Gionee have launched three budget smartphones — S6s, A1 and A1 Lite in the Nepali market since 2016. Samir Dhungana, Marketing Manager at Tele Talk Pvt Ltd said, “So far we have sold more than 20,000 units of Gionee S6s and sales of our A1 and A1 Lite continue to grow.” The company will soon launch the new Gionee X Series.
Priced at Rs 23,999 Gionee S6s is a camera-centric smartphone and boasts a 13MP rear and 8MP front-facing camera equipped with a screen flash and front LED flash.
The A1 and A1 Lite, priced at Rs 29,999 and Rs 25,999 respectively, also flaunt great camera technology, but their unique selling points are their massive 4010mAh and 4000mAh batteries.
Huawei
Another popular smartphone brand from China, Huawei Technologies Nepal Co Pvt Ltd recently launched their high-end flagship smartphone P10 Plus. The company plans to launch three new budget-friendly smartphones this July.
Their first smartphone with a dual-lens camera — Gr5 2017 was launched in January, 2017 for Rs 29,999. It features a 12MP rear camera with LED Flash, 6P lens, 1.25um pixel size and Phase Detection Auto Focus, a 2MP secondary shooter and an 8MP front-facing camera.
Their other budget smartphone is the Huawei Y6II (4G) launched in mid-2016 and priced at Rs 17,999. Armed with a 3000mAh battery and powered by Huawei’s own octa-core Kirin 620 SoC, the device delivers great performance for its segment.
Micromax
The smartphone brand Micromax is one of India’s largest smartphone manufactures and is well known for its low-cost feature phones. Relatively new to the game, Micromax has swiftly made a mark in the Nepali market with their budget smartphones.
Pashupati Trade Link Pvt Ltd launched three budget smartphones — Canvas 2 (Q4310), Canvas Ultra M1 and Bolt Mega in the Nepali market this year. Dhiredra Kushwaha, Manager — Marketing at Pashupati Trade Link said, “We recently launched another smartphone in our Canvas Series — Canvas 2 (Q4310) on June 11 and it has gained popularity because of its unbreakable screen.”
Canvas 2 (Q4310) is priced at Rs 15,300 and features a 5-inch HD display with 720p resolution topped by 2.5D Corning Gorilla Glass 5.
Similarly their Canvas Ultra M1 and Bolt Mega priced at Rs 20,900 and Rs 10,175 respectively have both
received positive feedback from customers. The Canvas Ultra M1 comes with a massive 4000mAh battery underneath its sleek metal design. Both Canvas Ultra M1 and Bolt Mega run Android 6.0 Marshmallow. The company will soon be launching another budget smartphone — the Canvas 1 as part of their Canvas series.
