Two-day international seminar on hip and knee arthroplasty concluded

The international hip and knee arthroplasty symposium and workshop has successfully concluded at Dhulikhel Hospital.


At least 40 orthopedic surgeon and some 30 nurses took part in the two-day workshop that kicked off from May 30. The seminar was jointly organized by Dhulikhel Hospital, Nepal Orthopedic Association, Australian Nepalese Medical and Dental Association.


In the seminar, Prof. Dr. Buland Thapa, Dr. Kush Raj Shrestha, Prof. Dr. Dirgha Raj RC, Prof. Dr. Arjun Lamichhane, Prof. Dr. Deepak Shrestha, Dr. Suresh Pandey, Dr. Shrawan Kumar Thapa, Dr. Kapil Mani KC, Dr. Rishi Bista, Dr. Suman Babu Marhatha and Dr. Rabindra Regmi, among others, shared their knowledge and skills.


The information on the methodology of hip and knee transplantation, the materials required for it, and their principles were imparted to the participated doctors and nurses in the seminar. The participants were also given training by using the artificial bones.


A team of 16 doctors and nurses from Australia also shared their ideas on the technology used in Australia.


Chairman of Nepal Orthopedic Association Prof. Dr. Buland Thapa said that such seminar on hip and knee transplantation should be organized from time to time and at various places. He also committed to giving continuity to holding such seminars.


“Holding such national and international seminar continuously will create interest among the young surgeons,” he said.


Prof. Dr. Thapa further clarified that two-thirds of the population living in villages suffering from joint problems are deprived of the medical treatment as the two-thirds of doctors prefer to live in the city areas.


General Secretary of Australian Nepalese Medical and Dental Association Dr. Kushraj Shrestha said that they received the good response as the seminar was very effective.


“We are very encouraged as such training and discussion was held for the first time in Nepal. We can also organize such seminar in the coming days if required,” he said.


Similarly, orthopedic surgeon Dr. Rabindra Regmi of Dhulikhel Hospital said that during the seminars, the senior doctors would provide their knowledge on joint transplantation to the junior doctors as well.


“Such seminars will make the young surgeons interested in hip and knee transplantations which will also be helpful for them to impart their ideas to the patients,” he said.
