Sundhara’s central jail accommodating prisoners double its capacity

The Central Jail, Jagannathdeval, Sundhara, has been found accommodating more prisoners than its capacity.


A team from the Office of the Attorney General and the National Human Rights Commission saw this situation in course of carrying out monitoring of the Central Jail.


Jailor Ganesh Prasad Bhattarai said that they are unable to provide decent facilities to the inmates in lack of physical infrastructures.


Bhattarai said that prisoners have been facing problem due to delay in the police investigation and to provide justice.


The Jail established in 1971 BS has the capacity to accommodate 1,250 prisoners. Bhattarai said that now there are around 2,750 prisoners.


He further said that alternative arrangement of prisoners should be made by shifting them to another place as the physical infrastructures of Central Jail are in dilapidated condition.


Attorney General Agni Prasad Kharel said the problem has surfaced as there is a high number of inmates in the Jail than its capacity.


Similarly, NHRC member Sudeep Pathak said that the Jail was not found in line with international standard prepared by United Nations.


Out of 350 foreign prisoners in the Jail, 26 are women. Most of them are drug smugglers and facing a charge of overstaying their visa.
