Release of Basnet riles women cooperative victims

Cooperatives Victim Women Rights Protection Committee has expressed its objection to the release of Oriental Co-operative Limited proprietor Sudhir Basnet.

Basnet was arrested from his Dhapasi-based resident on December 28, 2016 and convicted on a fraud case of cooperative deposits by the Kathmandu District Court. He had been serving time at the Dillibazar Prison since the court verdict and was released on bail last week.

In a press meet here Sunday, committee Chairwoman Kuntidevi Pokhrel claimed the release of Basnet failing to return around Rs 4 billion deposits including interests of over 11,000 people has hurt the sentiments of victims. She was of the view that immobile property registered in the name of company should be sold on auction and amount to be obtained from the sale should be utilized in recouping depositors.

The company with its headquarters at Maitidevi of Kathmandu Metropolitan City-13 was registered in 2053 BS and had 13 branches in major cities of the country before its closure on 2069 BS. It was apparently hit by impact of economic imbalance. The Committee last Friday called on Home Minister Ram Bahadur Thapa, drawing the attention to the same issue.
