India to provide additional air routes to Nepal

India has agreed to provide additional entry route for airplanes to Nepal. The only entry route from India was through Simara until now. Planes can also enter from Janakpur, Birgunj, Nepalgunj and Mahendranagar once this agreement comes into effect.

There was no progress on the issue despite the two countries in 2016 agreeing to conclude it by holding discussion at the technical level. The countries during the Nepal visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in May then agreed to immediately start technical discussion.

Officials of India and Nepal during the meeting that started in Kathmandu on Thursday have accordingly agreed to do technical study and start implementation from September. Air Navigation Chief of CAAN Narendra Bahadur Thapa and Air Navigation Chief of the Airports Authority of India AK Dutta are taking part in the discussion.

Technicians from the two countries will determine the route and do safety assessment before implementation.

Spokesperson at the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) Birendra Shrestha said Nepal will provide design, study and evaluation of all proposed routes to India within this month. India will study them and the officials of two countries will again meet before the routes will come into implementation.
