Players, officials demand fair selection

Kathmandu, May 30

Coaches, officials and players of Nepal Pencak Silat Martial Arts Association demanded the fair selection for the 18th Asian Games slated for Indonesia later this year.

Coach Safer Limbu said the association picked up a player and coach for the Asiad without selection event. “We were not informed about the selection of the player and coach,” said Limbu. “The association needs to organise a fair selection tournament before sending the names of the players and officials to international events,” he said.

According to Limbu, the association has picked up one Bikash BK as the player and general secretary Dorje Lama as the coach. “Bikash BK is not a Pencak Silat player. As far as I know he is from Shito-Ryu karate and he does not know anything about Pencak Silat,” said Limbu.

Limbu said he tried to contact president and other officials but they all turned deaf ears towards his plea. “I tried to convince them but no one is interested to listen to us,” he said. Dipesh Kumar Pun, the son of Vice-president Nanda Bahadur Pun, is the president of the association, while Karan Bista, son of National Sports Council Member Secretary Keshab Kumar Bista, is the vice-president of the association.

“We even tried to meet Member Secretary Bista but he too did not give time for us.” Pencak Silat is one of the 26 sports disciplines Nepal are taking part in the Asian Games.
