Main accused Gore surrendered to name bigwigs

Chuda Mani Uprety (aka Gore), the main accused of smuggling of 33 kilograms of gold and murder of Sanam Shakya, came to Nepal of his own volition to surrender.

Gore was arrested by the probe committee formed under Joint Secretary at the Home Ministry Ishwor Raj Paudel from Gaurighat of Kathmandu at 5:30 Tuesday morning.

A family source has told Setopati that Gore came to Nepal on his own to reveal the facts after revelation that he smuggled 3,799.559 kilograms of gold in the past five years.

“Gore who just managed smuggling of gold was presented as if he was the owner of 3,800 kilograms of gold. He was not happy with that. He, therefore, wanted to come to the committee and reveal who invested in the gold,” the source claimed.

The source said Gore had arrived in Kathmandu on Monday and he was arrested on Tuesday after his family informed the committee of his arrival.

Gore has told the committee that he is not the kingpin of gold smuggling but is rather a carrier cum facilitator.

“There have been revelations only about me. There are persons who work even above me. There should be revelations even about them,” Gore has told the committee confirming that Mohan Agrawal was the owner of 33 kilograms of smuggled gold that was robbed on February 21.

“My boys were responsible to carry the gold to the specified place. I did the setting. But the gold was robbed. Bhujung Gurung has a hand in that. It was robbed to finish me,” he has stated revealing that his relation with Gurung had deteriorated in recent times.

He has also revealed that he has smuggled up to 86 kilograms of gold through the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) in a day. “I have been named the kingpin. But I am not the main person. I used to work in connivance with a few of the 63 persons who have been taken to the court.”

Gore has also informed the committee about some more persons, including a few senior police officers, who helped him in smuggling.

Coordinator of the probe committee Paudel said the persons who have been named by Gore will also be soon brought to the book.

The issue of 33 kilograms of gold smuggled through the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) on January 23 came to the fore after the body of Shakya of Urlabari, who died while being tortured on charge of stealing that gold, was recovered in Biratnagar on March 2.

The probe committee has concluded that the gang of Gore smuggled 3,799.559 kilograms of gold in the past five years.
