Kathmandu

Xiaomi is one of the few companies which has successfully earned the heart of Nepali customers in a very short period of time. Vatsal Impex, the authorised distributors of Xiaomi products in Nepal have launched their flagship phone — Xiaomi Mi6 in Nepal. Priced at Rs 57,999, the 128GB Mi6 goes directly up against the OnePlus 5. How does it stack up against the competition? Let’s find out.

Design

In terms of design, Xiaomi Mi6 will appeal to some and won’t appeal to others. It is 2017 and it’s hard to find phones with a compact design. Fortunately though, the Mi6 is one of them. With dimensions 70.5 x 145.2 x 7.5 mm, it is easily the best one-handed phone you can get in the market right now. The phone weights 168 gm and feels quite hefty when compared to its predecessor, the Xiaomi Mi5.

Display

Xiaomi Mi6 features a 5.15-inch Full HD display which can turn very bright. Also, while many wanted a higher resolution screen for the phone, I found 1080p perfectly adequate for a screen of this size. The viewing angles are excellent. The display can also turn very dim and go as low as 1 nit when needed.

Performance

Xiaomi Mi6’s performance has to be one of its best features. The phone packs all the high-end features you would look for in a flagship phone. It includes a state-of-the-art Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 SoC, 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. The 64GB variant that was initially launched in Nepal has now been discontinued and only the 128GB variant is available.

The phone’s performance is better than most of the other smartphones I have used. The 6GB RAM is quite a bit of help in multi-tasking. I was not able to slow the phone down even once during my period of testing.

Camera

Speaking of cameras, there’s not one but three of them! What we get in front is an 8MP camera which can shoot excellent high-quality selfies. There’s also a beauty mode if you are into the selfie game.

The rear cameras are the highlight of the smartphone. Just like the iPhone 7 Plus, the Xiaomi Mi6 has one wide-angle lens and a telephoto lens capable of 2x zoom. There’s also a portrait mode for taking DSLR like photos with good background blur.

The phone can also record 4K videos. The 4-axis OIS on the wide-angle lens ensures that the footage is smooth and helps quite a bit in low-light. Simply put, the cameras on Xiaomi Mi6 are excellent.

Speaker and Call Quality

The speaker on the Xiaomi Mi6 has gotten a major overhaul. The earpiece now acts as a speaker. Combine it with the down-firing speaker, the sound that comes out of the Mi6 is better than most of the smartphones including the Samsung Galaxy S8. The call quality on the Mi6 is really good. The 4G speeds are also impressive. However, I noticed the network coverage wasn’t as good as in other phones in areas with poor network connection.

Battery

Xiaomi Mi6 is powered by a 3350mAh battery which is more than adequate for even the power users. The battery easily lasts a day and charging is quick with the supplied fast charger. The stand-by time of the phone is also really good. At the end of the day, I was left with 30 per cent charge and that’s really impressive.

Verdict

Xiaomi Mi6 is not a cheap smartphone to begin with and you can probably get it for a cheaper price in China. But if you buy it in Nepal, there’s a lot you are getting for your money. The phone comes with a one year hardware warranty as well as two years of software warranty. To add icing on the cake, the phone also comes with a free insurance programme that covers theft, breakage and other accidental damages.

All-in-all, Xiaomi Mi6 is an excellent smartphone and one you should certainly check out if you are looking for a phone under Rs 60,000 in Nepal.
